Multi-sports facility a reality in Eastrington thanks to windfall

August 23, 2021

Eastrington Playing Fields and Recreation Ground has been awarded £12,814 in funding towards the construction of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA).

The funding comes from East Riding of Yorkshire Council as part of the Commuted Sums from local housing developments and will go towards the construction of a new sports facility to benefit the whole community. In addition to the Commuted Sums funding, the playing fields have received £10,000 from the Six Penny Wood Wind Farm Fund and £50,000 from the FCC Communities Fund, meaning the total cost of the project - £72,814 - is now fully funded.

Caroline Scargill, Treasurer at Eastrington Playing Fields and Recreation Ground, said: “There are no facilities like this in the area and this project will provide a real boost to the people of Eastrington. “It’s fantastic that local funders have awarded us these grants and we’re really looking forward to our Multi Use Games Area taking shape over the next couple of months.  “We can’t wait to see people using the new facility for football, cricket, netball, basketball and tennis.”

The idea to develop a MUGA at Eastrington Playing Fields came after a consultation with the local community identified a need for more sports facilities, with a high number of respondents saying they were interested in playing 5-a-side football, netball or tennis. The current plans are to install the MUGA in the far corner of the playing field, with the development enabling the Playing Fields Association to set up village sports teams as well as allowing ad-hoc use by the community. Councillor Gary McMaster, portfolio holder for planning, infrastructure, and housing, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to facilitate this funding for a MUGA for Eastrington through Commuted Sums provided by local housing developments as a condition of their planning approval. This award will make a huge difference in the area.” Eastrington Playing Fields has been awarded £12,814 towards the construction of a Multi Use Games Area.
